Although many people have knowledge of multiple languages, relatively few are successful translators. Translation and interpreting are time-intensive tasks that require special skills and extensive knowledge of at least two languages.
Translators work with texts, whereas interpreters provide verbal translations. Both translators and interpreters provide a finished product in their own native language—for example, translating from French or German into English. Translators who are truly bilingual can of course translate both ways.
Translation is very labor intensive, and traditionally fees for translation are quoted per word or per line. At times, a translator may work with an editor, who concentrates on the grammar in the translated texts. Interpreting requires extreme concentration, and interpreters generally work in pairs. Fees are generally per hour or half/whole day, with expenses.
